Home Safety

It is important to us that we decorate our homes. Time is spent with getting the right place to live, the right community and enough room for each member of the family.

Recently I've seen the smallest bedroom turned into a closet or dressing room. Families like to have a theatre where they can watch movies. And the ideas are so vast to choose from however your house completely finished can be the most dangerous place for you and your family to hang out in.

Let's start with the bathroom. Watching a renovation of a lower level so the mother-in-law had her own suite. It was beautiful the bathroom was a dream of perfection. Looking at most of the improvement of the bathroom they include a shower with a low step. Low step or not seniors can have a problem making the step and some regular people might miss the step also. Steps even low ones can require balance issues especially when the area is soapy and wet.

All bathrooms need bars in them. Take the parent washing the toddler in the bathtub. Most bathrooms have the tub next to the toilet and then there is the sink. My point is that there is not a lot of room in most bathrooms you are on your knees. Washing the toddler can become a slippery mess as you rinse him/her off with water sliding all around you both. With nothing to hold on to you stand up and wrap the child in a towel. In the perfect world everything is dry, and you have no other distractions. But how many of us have perfect worlds?

The bathroom is the most dangerous room in your house. Just sit and ingest some of the bathroom situations. Every year about 235,000 people over the age of 15 visit the emergency rooms because of injuries in the bathroom and in 2022 I was one of them. This information is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Special attention and bars should be in every bathroom. We can think of the person that is late going out they want to wash their hair before leaving. A big night could mean rushing in and out of the bathroom. Maybe leaving it a little wet for the next person and they start to slide. Remember to make your bathroom safe for you and your family.
