Preparing for my hair appointment was great fun. I live in Fernandina Beach, FL and had to go to Yulee, Fl. In total a route of approximately 21 mile. It surprised me that so many people wanted to take advantage of me. One taxi service wanted $125.00 each way they had wheelchair accessibility. This would have been an easy ride for me since they deal with the handicap but do, they really think we are made of money. The service I chose to use cost me $27.76 to take me and $52.74 to pick me up when my hair was done. Each recieved a $10.00 tip and I had my wheelchair with me.
Ok, I am a disabled individual after getting out of the cab at my destination I had to guide/walk up a sidewalk while sitting in my wheelchair that was a little hill. This sidewalk was difficult to get up in my wheelchair twice I almost slide off the right side of the sidewalk. My wheelchair wanted to topple over to the right. it seemed to pull the chair that way. I was praying and God answered interesting a gentleman was sitting in his beautiful black SUV and looked at me but did not try to help me. Thankfully I made it to the front door of the shop.
Finishing my hair, the sidewalk is like a ride at an amusement Park. Trying to hold my feet tight the chair is picking up momentum trying to drag my feet heavily to keep control of the chair. The struggle of getting into the cab is over and back I go.
This trip left me with a lot of questions. Whose responsibility is it to inform the disabled of city areas that need work? The trip was something that I looked forward to and enjoyed when inside however who works with the handicapped to inform them of problem areas? Who are the representatives of the handicapped? When and where do you meet?
From my experience Yulee, FL you should be ashamed of some of your sidewalks.
